Two friends from Victoria Texas started Moonshine Drinkery. "We are huge fans of Victoria's deep Texas roots, its community, and its amazing historic downtown. We want to do our part in making downtown Victoria a destination for all to enjoy." Owners, Jon Paul Hull and James Gietz, grew up in Victoria. They became acquainted long after leaving their hometown, both living in Houston, about 10 years ago. The two became fast friends over a shared interest in entrepreneurship, fun, and most of all a passion for their shared home town of Victoria!
In 2013, Jon Paul embarked on two projects that would lay the groundwork for making Moonshine Drinkery become a reality. Jon Paul and his wife Ember finalized the restoration of a home in Old Victoria. The restoration garnered a 2013 Victoria Preservation Incorporated (VPI) rehabilitation award. (The building for Moonshine Drinkery is also a past winner of this award). This project, along with a commercial building renovation in Victoria, helped solidify the desire to invest further in downtown Victoria. Moonshine Drinkery is a perfect fit with the vision of the Victoria Main Street program that encourages economic development in historic downtown through historic building restoration and preservation.
Simultaneously, Jon Paul and James collaborated in helping renovate and rebrand a bar in central Houston. The two decided it was time to focus their attention homeward to historic Downtown Victoria, and make Moonshine Drinkery a reality! "Both of our families are business owners in Victoria and both are huge supporters of downtown Victoria," commented Jon Paul. After exploring a number of options, a chance conversation led them to an ideal locale for the concept and vision they had in mind. The building, located in downtown Victoria (near the town square), captures the warm southern feel the two envisioned. The property affords ample space for outdoor fun and live entertainment, as well as room to accommodate future fun plans of moonshine-making festivals and cook offs. The owners are energetic about local festivals and look forward to hosting their own cook offs, one pot cooking contests, crawfish boils, and block parties. It's a priority for James and Jon Paul to give back and support local charities as much as possible, and plan to organize and host many charity events in their space downtown. "We love this town, and can't think of anything more fun and fulfilling than giving residents another venue to enjoy while helping support local charities along the way," James added.
Moonshine Drinkery has a kicked up southern feel, great drinks (of course), live music, hand crafted cocktails and Moonshine... let’s not forget the Moonshine!! "Moonshine Drinkery incorporates the kind of atmosphere we personally enjoy as well as things we love about Victoria... although we cannot figure out how to get a lifted truck or a skeet range inside the building... so suggestions are welcome!” commented Jon Paul. The two envision both locals and visitors continuing to make downtown their destination for the evening... walking around historic DeLeon Plaza and having dinner at one of the great downtown restaurants like The PumpHouse or The Sendera and then putting their party pants on at Moonshine.
"Our goal with Moonshine Drinkery is to create a place that has a warm atmosphere where people will be equally comfortable stopping by for a Happy Hour drink in work attire or in their jeans and boots" commented Jon Paul. "Comfort, customer service, and fun are our highest priorities." James explained, "We're going to do everything we can to make this a place we'd love to enjoy as a customer. There will be music videos, Dukes of Hazard reruns, a Moonshine shot menu, and an upbeat atmosphere. Our goal is to produce as many smiles and high fives as possible, all while doing our part to help solidify downtown Victoria as one of the premier destinations in South Texas.” “We hope that ‘Meet you at Moonshine’ will be a place to enjoy current friends and make new ones. We look forward to good times ahead,” Jon Paul added.
During sporting events Moonshine will have the game on inside and outside. When the sun starts to set the TV's will be playing music videos that match the sound. The videos will be geared towards a Southern style of music but will play some hits if you need to dance it out. "We hope that people will follow us on the website and social media outlets as we will be posting the progress of this project. We really couldn't be more excited about it!" Said Jon Paul.
The Dukes had The Boar’s Nest and Victoria now has its own modern version… Moonshine Drinkery!
